Shamwari Yemwanasikana (SYS)
Shamwari Yemwanasikana (SYS) is a community based organisation that seeks to promote the rights and empowerment of the girl child in the home, school and community setup. It is registered under the laws of Zimbabwe as a trust in 2014 and awarded a Private Voluntary Organization registration in July 2017.
Headquarter in Chitungwiza, the organisation operates in Harare, Mashonaland East and West province. Shamwari Yemwanasikana was formed with the aim of emancipating the girl child from all forms of abuse that continue to hinder her development. The organisation seeks to address these concerns and protect the girl child from anything that have the potential to destroy her dreams, hopes and full development.
Envisioning a nation girls are free and able to stand up for their rights, with full support from the community and policies, SYS at engaging all stakeholders including communities, schools, governments and policymakers in advocacy and lobbying for eradication of practices, which impede the girl child’s full physical, emotional, spiritual growth and development . This is done as a way of creating room and providing support for the full empowerment of the girl child in all spheres of life. The organisation’s objective is to, among other things document and disseminate information on girls’ rights, HIV/AIDS treatment and education and psychosocial support as well as promoting the reproductive health of girls through advocating for the provision and improved access to reproductive health facilities.
Shamwari Yemwanasikana works with other like-minded organisations and partners in and outside the country to advance the cause of the girl child. It has seven programmatic themes which are entrepreneurship for the girl child, human rights, improved access to information and communication technologies (ICTs), poverty alleviation and sustainable development. HIV/AIDS, livelihoods and child protection. Last year the organisation manged to reach than 1,000,000 people in Zimbabwe through its programs interventions utilizing various social, print and visual media and an estimated 250 000 girls directly benefited from form the organisation’s work.
Through its Child Rights Clubs, Community Development Committees, Men’s and Boys’ Forum, Men as Role Models, Community Girls Clubs and Community Champions against Child Marriages, Shamwari Yemwanasikana fights for the eradication of harmful practices which impede on the girl child’s full physical, emotional, spiritual growth and development through its. These grass root interventions offer community based solutions through the engagement of everyone surrounding the girl child for collective problem identification and solutions so as to place girls at the centre of protection.
At least 2530 girls who had been exposed to abuse where assisted through the provision of counselling and psychosocial support for those going through rehabilitation processes.
