CBO Assists Community to Acquire Identity Documents
Wadzanai Development Trust, an organisation based in Goromonzi has embarked in a process engaging the local leadership, councillors and village headmen, to lobby District Registry offices to issue identity documents to members of the community, amid concerns that most people far above the legal majority age are living without these documents.
Birth certificates and national identity cards are important for the provision of services to citizens. National IDs also enables citizens to participate in key governance and democratic processes such as elections, while birth certificates are a prerequisite for children to be enrolled at any school in the country. Those without birth certificates usually fail to write their primary and secondary examinations.
This came at a time Zimbabwe is heading towards the 2018 harmonised election, and most people especially in the rural and peri- urban areas are failing to access identity documents making it very difficult and impossible for them to vote. Wadzanai’s exercise will see many people in Goromonzi and some other areas the organisation operate in being able to acquire their identity documents. The councillors and village heads were urged to assist villagers with referral letters for easy acquisition.
A total of 30 people have so far been able to acquire their documents.
