STORIFY: Child Prostitution... A Tale of 9 Year Old
Last week there was an uproar on social media over the escalating child prostitution in the informal settlements of Caledonia, Hopley Farm, Epworth and Hatcliffe where young girls, young as nine are selling their bodies for survival. This came after a local organisation, Kwatswe Sisterhood exposed a nine (9) year old girl, running by a pseudonym Lady B, who’s involved in prostitution.
This sparked storm as some people think it was a stage managed act, but however, child prostitution is a reality in Zimbabwe. Young girls, confronted with the biting economy and poverty have resorted into prostitution. Sometimes this is not voluntary, but are compelled to do so by family members, especially care-givers.
Child prostitution remains to grow and presents itself as a salient problem that needs urgent attention. Despite the scourge of HIV/AIDS the young girls have surrendered themselves to the pitfalls of sex work and have accepted that whatever befalls them is part and parcel of leading such a life.
